Watch Your Words

I’ve known for awhile that your words have such a huge impact on your beliefs, how you feel, how your day goes, etc. Your words are so powerful!

How often are your really paying attention to what you say though? It’s not always just about what you say, but how you say it.

Recently I’ve been getting back into journaling in the morning, and it’s been so good for me! I highly recommend journaling as a way to get your thoughts out, work through things, planning, gratititude, affirmations, whatever you need!

I noticed that I had been stressing out about work and all of the things that I had to do. In my journaling, I caught myself saying “I need to…”. I had a lot of things that I “needed” to do. I realized that when I wrote, “I need to do,” that it felt awful and overwhelming. It made me feel even more stressed out about what my day was going to look like.

I decided that I was going to stop saying “need” and replace what I wanted to write with different words. For example, I may start off thinking “I need to finish those reports today,” and then I would change it to “I am going to finish those reports today.” When I change it from “need” to “going to” it was more empowering for me. It also sounds like I have more of a plan to get it done rather than another thing that is piled onto my plate.

Another example is “I need to drink more water.” I replace that statement with “I enjoy drinking water throughout the day.” See the difference? Saying I need to drink more water is like uuggghhh I know I’m supposed to drink water, but I don’t want to!! Changing the statement changes my mindset to a more positive state. I’m affirming that I enjoy drinking water and it will be easy for me to drink water throughout the day.

I know it may sound small and cheesy, but this small change in words can make a big difference in your mindset.

When I decided to avoid using the word “need” it made me aware of how much I would journal about what I needed to do. I don’t need to do anything. I get to choose what I want to do. When I shift my phrasing, I shift my mindset to becoming more positive and empowering.

What phrases would you like to (almost said need!! #workinprogress) adjust? How could you speak to yourself in a more positive way?

Be YOU. BeYOUtiful.
