Redefining Success

Last year I completed my Life Coaching Certification and am designated as a Certified Success Coach. I have such a passion and desire to see others succeed, so being labelled a Success Coach felt appropriate.

To be honest, I haven’t really put it out there that I am a Success Coach because I felt like I was not actually successful yet.

How am I to help others when I feel like I haven’t been “successful”?

Well, I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting lately and have really been thinking about what success actually means to me.

If you’ve read my other blog posts, you may notice that I love utilizing definitions. I just think looking at the actual definition of a word can help give the word new meaning.

So of course I’ve looked up the definition for success for this post.

Success – the accomplishment of an aim or purpose.

With this definition of success, it can seem feel like success is so far a way. Like you will only be successful if you have fulfilled this big goal or are set in your sense of purpose. And right now, I’m carving out my path and feel like my accomplishments don’t look big enough on paper to be deemed as successful.

After sitting with my thoughts around success, I’ve realized that it may not look like I am super successful in the eyes of some people, but that I have actually done quite a lot that I can claim as successful.

I would like to define success as taking one small step in the direction that feels right to you.

I think that you can be successful every day in whatever it is that you want to do. I want you to stop thinking about what success should look like, and what you should do to be successful and start defining success on your terms.

Success can be whatever you want it to be. If success to you means making 6 figures, great. If success to you means being able to take a midday nap, great. If success to you means publishing a book, great. If success to you means being at home with your kids, great. If success to you means taking extravagant vacations, great. If success means reading daily, great. If success means making someone smile everyday, great. You get the idea.

Success is whatever you want to have your life look like. AND success is taking the steps to get there. If you want to make those 6 figures and you aren’t there yet, it doesn’t mean that you aren’t successful. You showing up every day and putting in the effort is success. Every time you take a small step towards that end goal is an accomplishment. Success is not just about the end goal. It’s about the journey. It’s about how you get there.

And you may be on your way to “success” and realize that what you thought “success” looked like for you, is not for you. That’s ok! Knowing when to step away is part of success.
